Waste Carrier Licence details: The Dunmow House Clearances website is part of the Essex House Clearances group of websites. We are are fully licenced under UK Environmental Agency legislation with an Upper-Tier waste carrier licence. An Upper-Tier waste carrier licence is a legal requirement for any organisation or individual who offers any form of waste or property clearance service. A ‘lower tier’ licence is only legally acceptable if the organisation clearing your property is a registered charity / voluntary group.
Why does a waste licence matter?
Although it’s not hard to understand people looking for the lowest possible price for a house clearance, the unfortunate result of this is that parts of the Essex countryside have been turned into dumping grounds for fly-tippers. These unethical individuals (and sometimes firms) make their living by offering dirt-cheap clearance services, taking your money and then dumping your belongings in the countryside.
Waste carrier licences are issued by the UK Environmental Agency, add traceability and require holders to dispose of unwanted items at registered recycling stations (where the licence must be shown and the waste is transfer recorded). Anyone who collects any type of waste from you requires an upper-tier waste licence by law. An upper-tier waste carrier licence only costs £154 for 3 years. There is also a (free) lower-tier licence available, but these are for businesses which dispose of their own waste – NOT yours – or for registered charities / voluntary organisations.
It’s fair to say that anyone willing to break the law to save £150 for a licence is highly unlikely to pay to dispose of your house contents legally (typically £190-200 per ton / full transit van load). It’s worth remembering that if the contents of your property get dumped in the countryside and are traced back to you, you’ll need to prove it wasn’t you who dumped them there. Ignoring the environmental damage and ethics, the risk is that your dirt-cheap waste removal costs could turn into a very expensive criminal conviction for fly-tipping!
